Northwest Monitor, January 26/20

This week we’ll take a look at provincial budget hearings in Sioux Lookout. On the federal scene, the Conservatives are looking for a new leader. Make sure you have medical insurance if travelling into the US.

But first we start with the Grey Cup. It was an exciting couple of days for the CFL championship trophy in Kenora, as last weekend the Winnipeg Blue Bombers brought it to fans. Jake Goselin talked to Bombers fullback John Rush about the Cup and the fire that broke out in their hotel on Friday, January 17th.

The provincial government has started pre-budget consultations and the needs of the Sioux Lookout area is front and centre. Part of the conversation includes opening up a detox and addictions centre in lieu of the closure of the Dryden centre, an hour south of Sioux Lookout.

As Mike Ebbeling tells us a delegation went this past week to the “Hub of the North” to discuss the urgent needs facing the community.

Trips into the US from Ontario could prove costly if you don’t have travel medical insurance. We will hear that in the past anyone travelling outside Canada was covered up to $400 for medical expenses, but as of January 1st, the Ontario government has ended that.

Randy Thoms has more on trips that are seen as routine due to living close to the American border.

The federal Conservative Party is now looking for someone to replace Andrew Scheer as party leader.

As Vic Krasowski tells us, one northwestern Ontario party official will be looking at the race with a great deal of interest, hoping for a person who will help bring change.
