No Strike In Thunder Bay…Schools Open

Public high school teachers in Thunder Bay are not going on strike today, and all schools are open.

It comes as members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation are holding a one-day walkout at nine school boards in the province. They hope it will pressure the Ford government to negotiate a new contract.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce is calling the move “irresponsible”. He claims the province is ready to continue negotiations.

“The time is for OSSTF to come forward with a move. They have not changed their position from the beginning of this process, for months now. And I believe quite strongly that the ball is in their court to come back to the table, or rather present to the table an augmented plan that can get us to a deal.”

The only board affected in northwestern Ontario is in the Rainy River district.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
