African Refugee Arrives In City

A refugee who escaped persecution in Africa is in Thunder Bay thanks to a fundraising campaign.

Alan Forbes along with Gary Mack helped to bring Heri Hamisi to the city and they tell us the new resident is just happy to be here.

The 33-year-old Hamisi was forced to seek safety away from his home country of the Congo because of his sexual orientation. Mack says Hasimi had to escape to Burundi, but “things didn’t turn out to be much safer there either, unfortunately, so I don’t think we got him here a minute too soon, to be honest.”

Forbes and Mack are grateful to those who donated to the $7,000 Go-Fund-Me campaign to bring him to Thunder Bay.
