Minister Under Fire For Teacher’s Strike

The Minister of Education was once again facing the opposition’s wrath in the legislature over the one day strike by public high school teachers along with support staff and education assistants.

Stephen Lecce says the government has put a good offer on the table to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.

“What is true through the process is they haven’t made any new proposals,” says Lecce.

“But in addition to that, they have sort of hardened their position on increasing compensation to 1.5 billion across teachers tables. We are offering for taxpayers $750 million increase.”

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says parents had to scramble to find suitable day-care today and in some cases had to take a vacation day because of the one-day walk-out.

She says the government is to blame because they didn’t send anyone to the bargaining table yesterday, even though it said it had a new deal to present.
