The overhaul of Ontario’s health care system continues with the creation of five new super health agencies today.
Health Minister Christine Elliott notes the transformation will be done in part with government funding through Ontario Health Teams. “By investing $27-billion over 10 years in hospital infrastructure projects, building more long term care beds, and increasing community based services.”
The minister points out the Teams will get patients the care they need in the right place, which includes at home, to help end hallway medicine. “The hospital isn’t always the best place for a patient to receive care. And I say this especially at a time when many of our hospitals are experiencing over 100% capacity.”
This will bring together all health care providers under one umbrella. “Hospitals working with home care as a single team can begin to plan for and coordinate a patient’s return home as soon as they’re actually admitted to hospital.”
There is one Ontario Health Team based out of Thunder Bay, with local health authority Rhonda Crocker Ellacott in charge.
