Hobbs Extortion Trial Begins Today

Former Mayor Keith Hobbs and his wife Marisa are having their day in court starting this week.

Their extortion trial is scheduled for four weeks and has been two years in the making.

OPP originally laid the charges against them in July of 2017 when Hobbs was still Mayor.

Their co-accused can’t be named because of a publication ban, but is also facing a charge of extortion.

Previously, defense lawyer Brian Greenspan told our newsroom the charge was unjustified and would be vigorously defended.

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, extortion is defined as obtaining anything or trying to obtain something from another person through threats or accusations. In some extreme cases involving firearms , the minimum sentence has been five years to a maximum of life in prison.
