Evacuees Could Come To Thunder Bay

It’s still not certain if Thunder Bay will host evacuees from Bearskin Lake First Nation.

Derek Fox is the Deputy Grand Chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and he tells us the water flooding the northern Ontario community has not receded safely enough from the Severn River ice jam. “They were supposed to evacuate sometime this morning. Things change almost hourly there, so as far as I know they’re being evacuated today to Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay.”

A State of Emergency was called Sunday night after ice jammed up the river, causing the community to flood.

The provincial government has been working with the First Nation community, and NAN, by bringing in sandbags and keeping the nursing station operating to ensure everyone’s safety.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
