Homelessness and addiction are some of the topics the Nishnawbe Aski Nation is going over at the Delta Hotel on the waterfront.
Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox says they want to help homeless Indigenous people from Timmins to Kenora to Thunder Bay. “People that have fallen through the cracks. You know, people that have struggled with addiction, or they’ve been flown out here for court, and they haven’t been able to go back home.” The NAN Deputy Grand Chief adds he often thinks of the homeless during the cold winter, while working with the Shelter House to address the problem.
It’s part of a 2-day meeting for the NAN Chiefs, which Fox says will include health, education, infrastructure, and how to discuss these items with the federal government. He adds NAN wants to start its own education system within the next 4 years.
They also touched on potential of residents evacuating Bearskin Lake First Nation due to the flooding of the Severn River.
