Crosswalk Campaign Brings In $5K

A great response from the community in a donation drive for rainbow and trans flag coloured crosswalks in our city.

Thunder Pride Chair Jason Veltri tells us he is blown away by the community’s support, “excited about hitting the 50 percent mark in less than a week and that’s something that’s really important, we did this in less than a week and our community is behind us. We are very thankful for the support so far.”

The GoFundMe account was launched last week and has already raised just over $5,000 towards the $10,000 goal. You can check out the campaign and donate by clicking HERE. Veltri notes although they are matching the donations up to $5,000 they don’t want to give up on their fundraising efforts just yet. “We want to raise as much money as we can and try and raise $10,000 and then add $5,000 of our money to bring the total to $15,000.”

Thunder Pride is looking to raise up to 50% of the cost which could be between $10,000 to $15,000. City Council previously decided to put $28,000 in the 2020 budget for the project. The final financial figures will be updated during the budget deliberations when a final decision on funding will be made.

The planning phase for the project is currently underway and is expected to wrap up in February of 2020. The plan is to have the crosswalks installed by June 1st, 2020, which marks the association’s 10th anniversary. A trans and rainbow-coloured flag crosswalk will be located near the Bay and Algoma area and another rainbow flag crosswalk will be painted in the Donald Street area.
