Councillor Hopes Meeting Results In Action

Thunder Bay police are getting credit from McKellar Ward’s councillor in the fight against crime.

On the heels of a suspected drug related shooting at Dease and Mckenzie last night, Brian Hamilton tells us residents and the police continue to monitor the area.

“The police actually are doing a very good job. There’s increased police presence over the last several months, neighbours are noticing. I’m getting calls all the time on how much they appreciate the police and what they’re doing in that neighbourhood.”

Police say one man was shot in the incident, and is in stable condition at hospital.

“It’s kinda hard to look at a neighbourhood you live in, that you see kids playing and people doing their best to fix up their houses and try to bring value to the neighbourhood, and then something like this brings us a couple of steps backwards, in the wrong direction.”

The ward councillor adds he’s doing what he can to curb violent incidents such as last night’s shooting.

“I’ve had meetings down there will several residents, over the last few months, and indeed right through the summer, and that was one of the houses that was identified months ago, it’s not an unknown house to authorities.”

Hamilton also wishes to point out this isn’t just a criminal issue. He says this incident highlights the need for additional support for people enduring addictions issues and deep poverty.

There’s a public meeting tomorrow night at 6:30, at New Life Christian Fellowship on Ogden Street to discuss this.
