Monday Night Wars – 1995

There was competition in the ring when World Championship Wrestling premiered a new TV program WCW Monday Nitro on the same time as the WWF‘s Monday Night Raw. The first show for Nitro was broadcast from the Mall of America.

The WCW had a roster of fighters who became big stars like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and Ric Flair, and some who jumped from the WWF as well.

Both shows were involved in a ratings battle known as Monday Night Wars, with each resorting to wild schemes to build up their ratings.

Nitro overtook Raw in the ratings in 1996 for close to 2 years, but Raw fought back starting with Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Mick Foley and others. The shows would take turns at the top until Raw took over for good in 1998.

Just another memory on the Retro Lounge, tonight at 6, brought to by the Backstage Music Store.
