Information Determines Amber Alert Length

There’s an explanation from Niagara Regional police as to why an amber alert issued this week for five children was cancelled before they were found.

Constable Phil Gavin tells us it’s usually because the police force which asked for it has gathered enough information in the search.

“After 5 hours that very loud provincial notification system stops, and the sharing of information falls to the respective police service that requested it.”

The Niagara officer adds the police force which asked for the alert can request it start again.

“The fear that would ever become of the amber alert program is grey noise, and people would just turn it off.”

The five children in this search this past week were found safe.
