Ontario’s next generation of the best sheet metal workers features a Thunder Bay man who won a recent provincial apprenticeship competition in Niagara Falls.
Sean Davis works at Comfort Heating Solutions, and points to who gets all the credit for helping him beat 11 other competitors.
“Probably the help from the guys here at my local, that helped me out before I went down there, and gave me advice of what to do, and I did some work with some guys in the shop.”
The local man tells us his road to victory started about six years ago.
“You know it was a great opportunity, a great job. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what sheet metal was all about when I first began. I came to really enjoy it as I learned more about it.”
The Thunder Bay man beat other competitors from Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, London and Windsor, with the top five finalists representing Ontario in the national competition in July out east in St. John’s.
He adds he still doesn’t know how he made it past guys from six other cities.
“I don’t know, because everyone there was a good competitor, and I wasn’t sure I was going to win. I felt I did really well, and I think I got lucky.”
In the competition, put on by the Ontario Sheet Metal Workers and Roofers Union and Ontario Sheet Metal Contractors Association, Davis created stationary binoculars, similar to what you would use at Niagara Falls.
