There is big concern for the safety of correctional officers at the Thunder Bay District Jail following the latest inmate assault.
Union official Brad Slobodian tells us there have been at least five “pretty serious assaults” in the last month.
He tells us those assaults have been “more savage than they’ve ever seen before,” and they can only “take so much.”
Slobodian explains that with the overcrowding and understaffing, the staff are stretched as much as they can be.
He believes the whole system is broken and must be addressed by the provincial government and waiting for a new jail in five years is not the answer.
The union official says “we can’t sustain five years” with the present conditions.
