Bay Village Coffee Helping Bring Over Refugee

The co-owners of Bay Village Coffee are fundraising to help bring a member of the LGBTQ community to Canada.

The man is fleeing his home country of the Congo in Africa to escape persecution based on his sexual orientation.

Bay Village’s Alan Forbes tells us when they heard of his plight they felt they needed to step up.

“There are a lot of groups around town who sponsor refugees, but typically they are sponsoring families, women and children, and we just thought who is taking care of the LGBT people. The chance of getting a single male refugee is pretty slim.”

They are hoping to raise $5,000 to help the man find accommodation, housewares and winter clothing.

Forbes says they want to use this opportunity to come together as a community to welcome a newcomer to our country and community.

The man who is a barber by trade has fled the Congo and is now living in Brunei waiting for someone to sponsor him.

“Sitting in limbo, no rights, no citizenship, no health care, no nothing, until we step up and take care of him.”
