Police Out With School Bus Reminders

Tomorrow marks the first day of school for Thunder Bay high school and elementary students.

Thunder Bay Police Traffic Sgt. Gordon Snyder tells us they will be enforcing rules around stopping for school buses.

“Expect the school buses to be out and about. Make sure you always stop for school buses, whether you’re approaching from the front or coming from behind.”

Snyder emphasizes it’s also a good idea to be on the lookout for kids in school zones.

“It just takes a second for an excited child to run out into the road to see a friend they haven’t seen for a couple months, and for something terrible to happen.”

He tells us it’s only a few bad apples that don’t obey the posted school zone speed limit of 40 km/hr.

“It’s more rare that we stop somebody and it’s their first speeding ticket. It’s very common that we stop people and they’ve had several, or at least one or two others. It’s a common problem with a select few.”
