Special Olympics Readying For 2020 Winter Games

We are just six months away from hosting the Special Olympics Winter Games.

Games Manager Doug Henry tells us they are making head way with preparations for the February event.

“We’ll be starting our volunteer recruitment campaign later on in the Fall, and we anticipate we’ll get a very good response to that as well.”

Henry says they still welcome support from the community to help more athletes take part.

He encourages supporters to visit their website if you wish to take part in their Draft an Athlete and Sponsor an Athlete programs.

“We’re hoping to have all athletes who are participating in the event to be drafted, so it’s a big undertaking,” Henry admits. “We anticipate Thunder Bay can meet that challenge.”

Tonight, local athletes will be training employees from the games sponsor Newmont Goldcorp.

“It’s a chance to connect with the athletes and see how they’re preparing, and how hard they’re working to be at their best in February, and it involves them directly in the event.”

The training sessions start tonight and will span four evenings across the next two weeks.

The Winter Games are taking place from February 25th to 20th, 2020.
