Thunder Bay Launches Two New Tourism Programs

Two new tourism programs are being supported through the city’s accommodation tax.

Tourism Manager Paul Pepe tells us one of the programs will be for existing events that need some extra money to grow.

“Help them bring in bigger keynote speakers that will have a bigger draw for our out-of-town guests, help them market into visitor markets, help them attract more visitors to their events.”

Pepe goes on to say the fund will help organizations bid on larger conventions and sports events.

The other program aims to support events that attract out-of-town visitors for overnight stays.

Program details are available through the Tourism Thunder Bay website.

Private, public and not for profit sector organizations are eligible to apply to both funds.

It’s anticipated the first twelve months of the tax would bring in over $2 million, and half of that goes towards the tourism agency.

Pepe thinks both programs combined should have a budget of $800,000.
