City Warned Of Incoming Expensive Program

A provincial government mandate could be costly for the City of Thunder Bay.

The former Liberal government-directed communities to offer a curbside collection of food and organic waste by 2025 and that will have an impact on our city’s finances according to Waste Manager Jason Sherband.

“It’s prudent upon us now to start planning for that; it’s also important for us to make City Council aware of the situation. The current provincial government is staying the course as of today, so we need to start planning accordingly.”

The City could have to spend millions of dollars extra to offer the new curbside program.

“If you take the collection, processing and transportation into it, we had numbers around $2.9 million annually. On the capital side, you got to purchase carts and maintain them, process it either outside the city or within, you are looking at near $4 million on the capital side.”
