VIDEO: Thunder Bay Pivotal For Car Dealership

The opening of a new Subaru car dealership shows how pivotal the company’s Senior VP believes Thunder Bay is for the company.

At a recent ribbon cutting ceremony, Don Durst pointed out all the Subaru brands are in this city.

“Our closest dealer is North Bay, or Winnipeg. So, for anyone travelling across the TransCanada highway, this is a very critical point for us. If there’s an issue with a vehicle, or people on holidays or travelling.”

He noted many aspects work together in this city’s favour.

“Got a wonderful medical school, you’ve got a great cancer centre, you’ve got a great university, your lake’s too high on water right now, you could start selling some water to someone now, but I think it’s a great community, and you’ve got a wonderful winter.”

And, there isn’t too much worry for top brass at Subaru car dealerships over tariffs President Trump continues to play around with.

Durst is noting ways around it, citing the company only has one plant in Japan and one in the US.

“Our volume is very split, and now with the new CPTPP, which gives us duty free out of Japan, that will definitely help. Mr. Trump, he is a wild card.”

Canada’s senior VP added this store shouldn’t lose it’s competitive edge.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
