New School Opens In Thunder Bay

Students in the city will soon be able to attend Ojibwe and Cree immersion classes at a new school.

The Lac des Mille Lacs Education Centre held its grand opening this week, and community spokesperson Celeste Pedri-Spade tells us it will help students learn a historical language.

“After what has happened and what continues to happen to our Anicinabe people reclaiming language is part of our healing.”

The JK and SK classes will be available in the fall in the old Hyde Park school.

Pedri-Spade adds it is an inclusive school welcoming all families to enroll their children in their programs.

Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation runs the new school and renovated it last fall.

Education Director Andy Graham tells us they will be adding a new school grade to the school each year and notes they already offer high school.
