Union Wants More Boots On The Ground

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union looking to put “Boots on the Ground” in northwestern Ontario.

It’s the name of a peer support program available to public sector workers and OPSEU’s Sharon Bak says there’s now a toll-free number in place, but they would like a more physical presence in the region.

“So we are looking to recruit at least ten individuals so we can hold training and start a team that can do face to face support with folks.”

OPSEU’s Mike Lundy says it allows for public sector workers to reach out to others if they’re suffering from mental health or emotional trauma.

“There’s also the opportunity to sit down and have coffee with someone, not everything’s over the phone, it creates a more personal experience.”

OPSEU is currently touring the region to promote the program and will be holding an event in Thunder Bay tomorrow.
