The NDP candidate for Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding says one of her priorities, if elected, will be health care.
Yuk-Sem Won, who won the nomination this weekend, tells us she wants proper access and support for the system for everyone.
“Making sure the people of the region aren’t lost in a one size fits all from the other areas. And that our values and our resources are really taken into consideration in the decisions that are made in Ottawa.”
The new candidate adds people are concerned with climate change and addressing the economy without putting people at peril.
She’s also concerned about the apathy she sees among voters, but hopes to motivate people through her experience as a labour activist and teacher.
“Both in the public system, as well as at the college, has given me a whole breadth of abilities to not only listen, but also to teach.”
The candidate adds when compared to the liberals and conservatives, the NDP is trying to bring a different type of politics to Ottawa.
And, the party’s platform to have universal pharmacare is one of the reasons its Thunder Bay-Rainy River candidate was drawn to the party.
Won tells us out of all the countries that have universal health care, Canada doesn’t have universal pharmacare.
“Which is that you can have access to your medicine, with your health card, not with your credit card. And I think making Canadians healthier is really trying to address it.”
