Officials with the Experimental Lakes Area say important research with worldwide impacts takes place here in the northwest region.
Spokesperson Sumeep Bath says one of their major projects took place in the 70’s.
“Our research involving acid rain has really informed governments and helped them take action against it.”
The E-L-A is now embarking on building a new education and training centre.
Bath says that the IISD is currently researching how to lessen the impact of oil spills on lakes, as well as a widely-prescribed diabetic medication called metphormine.
