A local supporter for injured workers is sceptical about a provincial government review of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board.
The Ford government’s review will look at board finances, administration, and efficiency.
Steve Mantis, who has long lobbied for changes to the WSIB, is hoping efficiency will not mean “just how little can be spent on administration and benefits to get by”.
Mantis is also concerned the review will focus on handing the board’s responsibilities to the private sector.
He says in the United States, where much of the system is privatized, “the majority of the premiums that get collected, go to the business side of the insurance company.”
The PC government says the review will provide it with new information regarding the board’s operations and how it compares to industry practices.
