Good Turnout For Alzheimer Walk

Plenty of people came out to today’s Walk for Alzheimer’s at the Marina.

Organizers say they were hoping around 300 people would take part.

Before the walk began, they had raised around half of their $60,000 goal.

This year’s walk was led by the Paajanen family, who shared their experiences with dementia to kick off the walk.

The Honouree Family were walking with their father Bob, who is living with Alzheimer’s.

Daughter Debbie Prete says for her and her family, it was a special day.

“It’s the 25th anniversary for the Alzheimer’s Walk, today is also [when we’re] the Honouree Family, and it’s also our parents’ wedding anniversary today,” she explains.

Her brother Billy Paajanen notes it means a lot to see the number of people who came out for the walk, and the amount of support the Alzheimer Society provides.

“[My brother] Robbie is in Toronto, I’m in Winnipeg, it kind of sucks that we’re far away. But knowing that we have my sister and her family doing everything for my dad, plus my mom, and having the Alzheimer Society as a whole, it just synergizes the healthcare that he needs.”

Participants walked three kilometres around Marina Park.

Organizers say if you still want to donate, you can visit the Alzheimer Society office on Park Avenue.
