MPP Demands Action On First Nation House Fires

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says it’s time for the government to commit to working with First Nations to improve fire safety in remote communities.

Mamakwa is calling for action following the recent fatal fire in Big Trout Lake First Nation.

He notes the K-I First Nation isn’t the only community hit by tragedy.

Mamakwa points to recent fatal blazes in Pikangikum, Wunnumin Lake and New Osnaburgh First Nation.

The NDP member stresses it’s not enough to feel bad and have moments of silence, noting action must be taken.

Mamakwa notes First Nation residents are ten times more likely to die in a house fire than the rest of Canada.
