A Thunder Bay mining expert is excited a southern Ontario company is exploring the potential for a new site just north of the city.
John Mason notes North American Palladium has been working in the Sunday Lake area, and will keep digging for palladium and platinum minerals for at least another year.
“In some cases you’re getting down close to a kilometre, vertically, so they’ve got some very deep targets they’re working on, so, that itself takes some time to drill, it’s expensive, but obviously can pay great dividends.”
He adds there are many uses for the minerals North American Palladium is drilling for, including internal combustion engines.
“You also get palladium and platinum, in your smart phones, because they’re precious metals. They’re used in the circuit boards, etc… in high quality electronics.”
The local mining expert feels it’s way too early to figure out how many jobs could come from this potential site.
“They’re not at the point of having a mineral deposit drilled off yet, but they’ve got several significant drill intercepts, of over 40 metres of mineralization of ore grand platinum, palladium mineralization.”
