Consultant Hired For Firefighter Review

A Southern Ontario consultant will look for savings in the city’s fire service.

City Council voted last night to award the $89,000 contract to a Barrie-based firm.

The planned review of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was previously criticized by members of the firefighters’ union.

The money was already set aside in previous years.

General Manager of Development and Emergency Services Mark Smith notes the city will hire the outside consultant to make sure the review isn’t biased.

“We certainly have the skills to look at what it is we do and how we do it, but I’m not confident we have the objectivity.”
