Ontario’s Environment Minister is rolling out changes to the endangered species act.
Speaking in Thunder Bay, Rod Phillips feels after ten years its time for some changes to be made to the legislation.
“We believe we can strike a better balance that protects important species at risk and their habitats while supporting the economic interest of local communities.”
One of the proposed changes includes giving the government more oversight and enforcement powers over those following the law.
Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown tells us it’s promising the government is reviewing the legislation.
“Very important for our forest industry, I think there is a way of looking after our climate and helping our economy.”
Ignace Mayor Donald Cunningham would like to see more details from the PC government but overall is looking forward to having a more balanced approach to the protection of endangered species.
“I’m confident from input from the forest industry and other stakeholders with the provincial government that it will work good for everybody so we can keep our employment in the forest industry going.”
