Library Opposes Funding Cuts

The head of Thunder Bay Public Libraries is disappointed with budget cuts to organizations that help libraries in the region.

John Pateman is not pleased with a 50-per cent cut announced for Ontario Library Services North, an organization which helps with things like borrowing books from across the province.

He claims the province believes the cuts won’t be noticed.

“But what happens when you remove those support services is eventually they will have an impact on those front-line services, so staff training won’t be as good as it was in the past,” Pateman explains.

Dryden’s library is one of several in the province to announce that it will no longer be able to offer inter-library loans.

Thunder Bay’s Chief Librarian says the size of Thunder Bay’s libraries could mean they’re less affected than those in smaller communities, but it’s too early to predict the exact effect.

“There is already a big campaign building up to oppose these cuts, ” Pateman points out. “Quite a few [MPPs] have written to the Premier protesting them. I’m trying to get something organized within the city here,”

He notes they will have more to say in the coming days.
