Thunder Bay North Star’s head coach is thrilled his team won the SIJHL’s Bill Salonen Cup with a 4-1 final over the Red Lake Miners, winning the series 4-1 in front of 2,120 fans at the Gardens.
Rob Degagne adds his players worked hard all season, doing everything asked of them.
“They’re young men that make mistakes like everyone else, but… boy oh boy, they sure came to play, and you know, a much bigger, physical team that we seem to be able to hit with them, and out skate them, and it’s really nice to win.”
North Stars forward Keighan Gerrie, who scored twice Saturday night, admits they still have work to do after the big win.
“Ever since the start of the season, this is what we’ve been looking forward to, and it’s just another step along the way. We got the league championship, and now we’re looking for the Dudley, and then hopefully the RBC.”
The North Stars forward acknowledged the Miners battled hard and didn’t give up.
Coach Degagne is ready for the Dudley-Hewitt Cup in Cochrane April 30th to May 4th.
“We do have a better idea of going into it this year than last year, because we were there last year. So we know what to expect. This year we have more depth, we’ve got 4 lines, and we even have guys in the crowd that can step in and play anytime, so, that’s a big advantage.”
And, this also means Red Lake Mayor Fred Mota has lost a wager with Thunder Bay Mayor Bill Mauro, and must wear a North Stars jersey for a day.
