MNRF Crews Prepped For Fire Season

It may not seem like it by looking outside but forest fire season is officially underway in northwestern Ontario.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Information Officer Chris Marchand says they do have personnel and equipment ready to go if a fire does spark.

He explains this is the time when they take the opportunity to get those crews in order and to make sure all equipment is in top shape for when the season picks up.

Right now there are no active fires, but in the coming weeks the fields will begin to dry out and grass fires will be the concern.

Last year, the Northwest Region claimed 839 of the provincial total of 1,325 fires, easily beating the 10-year average for fires across the province at 756.
