As you try to control your temper when looking at that 1.40 price at gas stations, a gas analyst says about 45-cents of that is tax.
Dan McTeague from GasBuddy.com notes not only is part of that the new federal carbon tax, there’s also provincial tax as well.
“14.7 for the province on every litre of gasoline, 10 cents for the federal government on every litre of gasoline, and then 16.2 cents per litre in all, for the HST”.
The gas analyst adds oil companies are making a killing, as it costs them about 50-cents a litre to buy the oil, but are selling it at 85-cents.
He also points out it’s also affecting diesel fuel, home heating and propane.
“All of these things are now subject to Ottawa’s carbon tax, and are permitted to have a tax on tax, which compounds the misery for most Canadians at a time of high prices, when most Canadians are indicating the number one issue in Canada is in fact, affordability.”
McTeague then sums it up.
“And of course, 4.2 cents a litre, which is a brand new spanking, slapped on gas tax, which I’m sure everyone is cheering.”
