LU Faces Legal Action From Former Dean

Lakehead University is confirming it has received a statement of claim from the former dean of the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

The statement indicates Angelique EagleWoman is taking legal action against the institution suing them for at least $2.6 million for constructive dismissal and racial discrimination.

The suit was filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Her lawyer says “Professor EagleWoman’s ability to lead the law school was continually undermined by the University’s senior administration, regularly making decisions about the law school without consulting her and going around her to deal directly with faculty and staff without her knowledge.”

EagleWoman was the first Indigenous woman to have been hired for such a position in Canada, but left earlier this year for what she believed to be “systemic racism.”

The University tells us they do not comment on litigation or any personnel matters.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
