Ford Government Given Road Map For Balancing The Budget

The new Conservative government can balance Ontario’s books at least four years ahead of schedule by exercising some spending discipline.

That’s according to Lakehead University Economics Professor Livio Di Matteo.

He has penned a new report for the Fraser Institute outlining a couple of different spending scenarios.

“The point of the report is that balancing the budget is actually quite doable. And it can be done modestly or it could be done more agressively creating room for tax reductions as well as debt reduction. And the debt in the end is the most pressing problem.”

He says maintaining spending at 2017/2018 levels means the government could balance it’s books by the end of the 2021 fiscal year and free up about 15-billion dollars in fiscal room.
