As we prepare for a provincial election in June, area municipalities are now accepting nominations for this fall’s municipal election.
Candidates can officially register until the end of July.
Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Mauro says that was done to accommodate municipalities who wanted to use ranked balloting.
There’s also changes to the amount of money a candidate can spend and who can donate to a campaign.
It’s now capped at $25,000.
“This is a pretty significant change,” Mauro notes, “We’re trying to level the playing field here.”
While individuals can still contribute to a municipal campaign, corporations and trade unions are no longer allowed.
One additional change requires 25 signatures endorsing the nomination of anyone running for municipal council where there are more than 4,000 electors. (File Photo)
