Mayor & Councillors Salaries Up For Review

City councillors are being asked to increase the salaries for future mayors and councillors.

Local business owner Matt Pearson headed up a citizens committee looking into council salaries and notes the federal government is doing away with the partial tax exemption councillors are now entitled to.

Pearson believes that if you’re asking someone to run for elected office having their salaries “go backwards” is not warranted.

Pearson also believes local council salaries have fallen behind other cities in Ontario of similar size especially for the mayor.

His committee is also recommending future salary increases be tied to the rate of inflation.

Under the committee recommendations the mayor’s salary would increase to just over $93,000 and councillors to about $31,500.
