Chief Coroner To Examine First Nation Fire Deaths

The province’s chief coroner is going to be investigating Ontario First Nation fire deaths over the last 10 years.

Dr. Dirk Huyer tells us he will be convening what he calls a “Coroner’s Table”, comprised of people who will examine the deaths in detail.

He says the group will have representation from a number of Indigenous communities which have suffered tragedies from fire deaths, as well as Indigenous Services Canada, the Ontario Fire Marshal, and members of his office.

Huyer explains he’s making the move because fire deaths in Indigenous communities happen more frequently than in non-Indigenous ones.

He hopes he can gain a better understanding of why such deaths occurred for possible future changes.
