Catholic Teachers Step Up Job Action

The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board says the latest job action from its elementary teachers could negatively impact students.

Rallying at the Board office Monday night, the local chapter of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Union announced its plans to cut feedback about student performance from report cards. The Board’s Director of Education, Pino Tassone, says parents need to know that information to judge how their children are doing.

Currently, there’s no date set for the board and the union to resume constract discussions, although Tassone says he remains optimistic that the two sides can reach an agreemet.

The president of Thunder Bay’s elementary Catholic teachers says that the union is content to continue its job action, which began in September. Aldo Grillo says before that can happen, the board will have to stop what he calls “spreading misinformation”. He says the board has been sending out false information to parents about what the real issues are between the board and the union.

Pino Tassone says the board has sent out a letter to parents, but adds the board has been consistent in its message that seniority-based staffing is the main stopping block in contract talks.
