LU Prof Warns About Poisonous Local Fungi

A Lakehead University professor is reminding you that Thunder Bay is home to some unfriendly fungi.

The warning comes after a boy in BC died from eating a poisonous mushroom recently.

Dr. Leonard Hutchison is an associate professor in Natural Resources Management. He says you should learn to recognize and avoid the deadly Destroying Angel mushroom.

He says you can identify it from the “cup” at the base of the stalk, and advises digging into the soil to check for that feature before you decide to pick it.

Another safe bet is to only pick edible, easily-recognizable mushrooms like chanterelles or morels, Hutchison says, and double-check using a field guide that they’re safe to eat. (Photo credit: www.ojibway.ca)
