$35K Crossover Okayed For Algoma & Cornwall

The city is moving ahead with a pedestrian crossover at Algoma and Cornwall.

Council moved last night to support the pilot project crossing, chosen from a short-list of 7 intersections across the city.

The city’s Engineering Director Kayla Dixon gives a mid-October opening date for the new crossover, and Administration is slated to report back to Council on the pilot project after a year. However, she adds Engineering will go ahead with at least one additional crossing before that evaluation is complete.

Active Transportation Coordinator Adam Krupper told Council the $35,000 “type B” crossover is an 80% savings over installing a traffic light.

When pressed by Coun. Iain Angus as to why a previously-proposed site at the intersection of Simpson and Bethune didn’t make the short-list of pilot candidates, Dixon says it requires a more complex, “type A” crossing.

In addition to costing more than the Cornwall and Algoma installation, she says the pilot project’s purpose is to give the public an idea of what to expect from future crossovers. All other proposed sites would be “B” crossings.
