Tonight’s Council Preview

A lower loonie is leveraging new marketing partnerships for local tourism.

The city’s Tourism Manager Paul Pepe says, with a weak Canadian dollar, increasing cross-border business is one of their biggest priorities this season.

Pepe adds Thunder Bay’s market is fairing well in comparison to the rest of the province. He says early indicators are showing growth, noting a number of fronts have caught fire this year, with the American angling market having made their way to Thunder Bay, and their seeing more motorcycle enthusiasts ride to Lake Superior.

Councillors will get a report on Tourism Thunder Bay’s 2015 marketing strategy at their meeting tonight.

Meanwhile, the North Superior Workforce Planning Board is also updating council on some of its latest initiatives. Executive Director Madge Richardson says they want to start collecting more information about where our local workforce is coming from, adding they have a number of questions for the College, University, and public and private Schools.

Finally, the city is recommending McKellar Mall and VictoriaVille amalgamate.

A review of VictoriaVille Centre’s governance and operations will be seen around the council table tonight, and looks at combining the Centre with the Mall in terms of management, operations, and strategy.

The report says finding a purchaser for Victoriaville is unlikely, as it always has and will continue to operate at a deficit. It goes on to say that McKellar Mall is profitable and can offset some of the operating losses. (File photo)
