A tragic anniversary in Kenora.
It was 45 years ago this week, an unknown man blew himself up, after robbing the CIBC bank on Main Street.
Joe Ralko wrote a book called the Devil’s Gap about the incident and says it’s amazing how policing has changed over the years.
He feels that if the bombing happened today, things would go much differently.
“There would be no people standing within two to three blocks, [police] would have shut that area down completely,”
Ralko adds that communications equipment has also progressed dramatically since then.
“There was one walkie talkie that the town of Kenora’s police had,” he points out, noting that the three police forces who responded to the bombing didn’t have as much experience working with each other either.
Ralko says even with new technology and DNA analysis, we likely will never know who the bomber was. (File Photo)
