As we approach the 2022 municipal election, Thunder Bay is preparing some changes to how you can vote.
A report from City Clerk Krista Power says you won’t be able to vote by telephone next year, but they will keep offering online voting in addition to in-person ballots.
Drive-through polling stations and mail-in voting are also being considered.
Clerk Power says that options are being explored to be as convenient as possible for voters.
“It’s always been our commitment that we have at least one polling station per ward to ensure accessibility, walkability, and for accessibility for busing so people don’t have to travel too far,” explains Power. “Certainly we are doing a full review of all the locations used in 2018.
The first day of the nomination period for the upcoming election will begin May 2, and close August 19.
Power goes on to says more information will be provided to potential candidates to ensure the process is clear.
“In advance of the 2022 election, certainly we’ll have information out ensuring potential candidates have the opportunity to understand what it means to file your candidacy, your nomination, all those sorts of things.”
The report also mentions that administration is prepared to respond to any major changes in public health rules next year.
The city is also factoring extra costs for cleaning and personal protective equipment into the 2022 budget.
