RFDA Getting $200K Donation

More fresh and frozen food coming to food banks and Indigenous communities.

A cheque of $200,000 was written by Ontario Power Generation, making the second straight year that they’ve donated to the Regional Food Distribution Association for COVID-19 relief.

Three-quarters of the money will be used to send food to the 20 First Nations that OPG serves, while the rest will let the organization buy two electric refrigerator units.

“That will allow us to freeze and maintain much more healthy food,” says Executive Director Volker Kromm, adding the organization has been relying on diesel-powered units and renting freezer space.

Kromm added: “That will really help us move more fresh and frozen protein and vegetables, so it’s a great move for us. In the end, we’ll be able to serve all those communities on an ongoing basis while reducing our costs, so we’re really pleased.”

Kromm noted the freezers will save the RFDA $25,000 each year in operating costs.
