DeMille Hopeful For Safe School Re-opening

When kids go back to class in September, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s Medical Officer of Health hopes the province will listen to the experts.

Dr. Janet DeMille wants the Ministry of Education to do whatever it takes to make schools safe.

“I think it’s fundamentally important that students be offered in-person learning for their own growth and development and the social connections. We know a lot about this virus, there are ways to optimize the safety of students,” Dr. DeMille says.

She points out that health officials have learned a lot during the pandemic and the re-opening of schools in the district and elsewhere in the province.

“I think it’s important to use that evidence, use what we know, and apply that to the re-opening of schools in September,” she notes.

DeMille would also encourage all teenagers to get vaccinated before school starts.
