Councillor Targeting Taxes, Justice And Ski Hills

There’s plenty on the mind of Aldo Ruberto heading into Monday night’s city council meeting.

The At-large representative has three motions, two of them requiring letters to be sent to the provincial and federal governments for help.

Ruberto wants a national and provincial tax review, leading to one flat tax that everyone pays. He says the current property tax system is outdated, not fair, and to get rid of the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation would save the city about a million and a half dollars. And, anyone making below, perhaps $20,000 or $25,000 a year, pays nothing.

He’s also wants criminal justice reform, which also needs federal and provincial help. The councillor says the public is fed up with drug dealers, and human traffickers going to jail, only to be released on bail, and when convicted, only serve part of their sentence. Ruberto also suggests better rehab programs in jails.

And finally, he wants Thunder Bay ski hills opened up again, after being closed for the pandemic. Ruberto points out the vast majority of people using local hills are from this area, and not from other parts of the province, making it easier to bring the virus here. He adds the ski hills in this area have followed all the health protocols and should open.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
