Questions Plague Vaccine Process: DeMille

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit’s Medical Officer of Health wants to hear more of the government’s plan for COVID-19 vaccination.

Dr. Janet DeMille says a lot of the process is still being worked out.

“There’s a lot of unanswered questions, and currently the supplies that we have had, that the [Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre] has been receiving, have been fairly limited,” Dr. DeMille points out.

Dr. DeMille says we haven’t gotten a lot of doses compared to the number of high-priority groups in the district, like long-term care home residents and First Nation communities. Those populations are at the top of Ontario’s list to receive the COVID-19 vaccine first.

She notes the hospital has been making use of the doses it’s received, but it isn’t a very big supply.

However, Dr. DeMille acknowledges the biggest challenge right now is a lack of certainty from the province, and the limited amount of vaccine.

Health officials have declined to specify how many doses the hospital has on hand, saying the province deems it confidential information.
