Powlowski Going Rogue On Assisted Dying Bill

Liberal Marcus Powlowski is going to vote against his party and not support a bill on medically assisted dying.

The Trudeau government introduced the legislation to amend a law involving those people whose death is reasonably foreseeable and for those whose death is not and who “must be faced with intolerable suffering and be in an advance state of irreversible decline as the result of an incurable illness.”

The amendments are in response to a Quebec court ruling on the issue which gave the government six months to make the changes.

Powlowski believes it does not allow someone a chance to change their minds about their choice to die.

“If you give them enough time…quite a few of them will come around to the realization there are reasons to continue to want to live,” explains the Liberal MP.

He insists it will be the only time he votes against his party on a issue but ” Given my background and the fact that I’ve worked for so many years as a doctor working with people many of whom are dying, I have some familiarity with ths issue.”
